Nicola Valley Film Society Showing:
The necessities of life:
Contender : Oscars best foreign language film:
Sept 21 2009, Merritt Civic Center, the Nicola Valley Film Society Showing :
The 1950s saw the A culture -ising of the Inuit people of the Canadian North. Sanatoriums for Tuberculosis were home to many unfortunate people . Very little hope was available for those separated from the healthy part of society. Except in the rare instance of Dr Norman Bethune who as a medical Doctor had the ability to come and go under his medical credentials and who had been reported to have successfully treated and rejoined mainstream society free of necessary quarantine. Only later to die of a simple blood infection from a small cut on his hand while treating Maoist Troops in the Chinese Revolution.
Consumption was nearly always a Death sentence lingering and malignant ,relieved only by the placating bedside manner of the nuns and Doctors that administered sanatoriums. So we can add another chapter to the nice nice that deludes us from the truth that real bad circumstances coming from real low living conditions. Like the Spanish flu that killed millions after the big war , money spent on destruction and the poor quality of life coming from it with disease and pestilence is again being rationalized in a 1950s setting that brings reconciliation and cultural enrichment to a
TB Sanatoriums through a mentioning relationship with a young man and a TB victim. What a desperate endeavor worse than the rationalizing of Bethune. Making a place of near certain cantonment for death a place of reconciliation. Some what similar to the rational of people liberated from their money by Shylock’s selling phony shares in public works such as the Brooklyn Bridge, it must be true I have a share in it I am not stupid, I am a nice guy. Better go buy some penile enlargement programs off the internet on your way to see this film.
The moral of this story is not hope and reconciliation , good attitudes bringing good vibes to your special God appointed life. It’s the death that comes from bad living . Bad decisions by not only you but communities that effect you. duck and cover while watching this film.
Then walk out after the screen goes down with a nice believing smile and go fumigate your bathroom, without a word to any one.
Put the issues of magazines reporting that the mafia sank atomic waste carrying ships in the Mediterranean Sea with the ones reporting That oil will last till 2050. Under a pile of Walt Disney reviews of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. On the back of the commode Then rest assured in the fact that you paid enough taxes last year to ensure that the public works will supply ample potable water all the rest of your life.
Finally rest in the naive assumption that there was a purpose for your life and that suffering of humanity, that’s you as well , is for moral improvement and soon it will be your turn to step up to the plate of hardship and embrace it in moral courage, and not drop the bar. Kind makes you want to move to a leper colony hey.
Ah well , ah well, ah well lets not and
just enjoy some of the breathtaking scenery that could not have possibly taken the lives of so many explorers. That is without a hidden cannot understand in this life purpose.
There is a slight redemption in the plot as the displaced Inut boy who gave the main character the hope to live ,graphically dies from consumption and does not return to the barrens to rediscover his culture giving only the main characters repatriation the sole virtue of cultural sensitivity we like to think w have.
If its your particular destiny to see this film then ,for delusion effectiveness and pure escapism it rates good
