This film, a great effort in computer graphics includes futuristic imaginative displays of technology, as well as popular themes of the ages. The United States Marine Corps even gets its individualism and moral duty reinforced by the characterization of a member doing his duty ultimately to his own conscience. The disabled character assumes the mind of captured alien creatures and becomes one in soul mind and body. ultimately going against the interests of the space age mining company trying to exploit a new world under the security of that force. Of course the need to respond to moral imperatives when things get out of control by greed and exploitation gives script to that age old conflict.

Recently the film has been in the news here as the director is contemplating a visit to the Alberta Tar Sand oil project to garner attention for his theme. Or make a political statement. No news about a visit yet, we wonder if there would be a following to go along that would develop into a protest. This could be an opportunity for the Police to try a new pepper spray or arrow head poison  to (in their view ) project what is important to the universe: law and order.

The demise of the exploiter mining people in the film has real relevance as always and the film could be used as  a political statement for sure. However we believe that the balance of  interests are served by the distanceing of  emotionally charged activism to compromise in its best form. This film could certainly become part of that balance in the hands of reasonable people.

The setting, off our planet does do that and so does the alien character building as well. However the relevent social themes are certainly apparent and pronounced.  Making the film very much worth seeing. With all deference to Edgar Rice Burroughs  and his generations  time, when the Tarzan films were similar. Thus making the universal theme implyed here to be as surely universal as the boy gets girl one that no one can claim as thier own.

Rates for seeing **** four stars.   good.
